What's New in Version 2.02

We read that some users have experienced performance issues. We're committed to making the story of Thomas and his friends a terrific adventure for your little engineers to enjoy.
**Tips for optimal performance**
This is a multimedia app with large images and lots of audio features. To maximize memory performance, we recommend you:
* Make sure you've upgraded to iOS 4.2.
* Close out apps running in the background. To do this, press the Home button twice to bring up the multitasking tray, hold down any app until you see red minus signs, then tap the minus sign to close each app.
* Restart your device.

Version 1.1 upgrades include:
- Now a universal app! Compatible with iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.
- Better performance: quicker, more responsive movements.
- Store lock: under Settings, parents can lock the Store section of the app.

3/5 stars

A decent transfer to digital media, but it needs polishing to justify the cost.

:
The good:
- very nicely narrated by someone with a good range of character voices.
- pictures are very nice and the choices to pan and zoom on elements of the pictures are well done and add interest.
- has a VERY unique feature that allows you to record your own voice as the story teller, making this a wonderful app for children who's parents can't be there to read to them (think extended and repeated overseas deployments...)

The "could be better":
- pictures from the book were scanned at a fairly low resolution given the degree to which portions are zoomed in upon, causing a noticeable jagged effect when viewing on the larger iPad screen. Still, my two-year-old hasn't complained to me about it yet. Even so, detailed pictures deserve a more detailed digitized image, especially given the choice to zoom in on portions of the original image when telling the story.
- accessing the coloring pages requires un-necessary button clicks to confirm a page selection.
- there is no word highlighting in the text of the story as the narrator is reading it, those who are expecting an experience to help develop young reading skills similar to titles produced by Ocean Media will be disappointed.
- the pictures have NO interactive elements other than page turning. Again, people used to Ocean Media offerings or even the more recently released "Misty Island Rescue" will be very disappointed in comparison.

The Ugly:
- the coloring pages are nice, but the line drawing algorithm used to make the lines is just awful! Spikes of color appear seemingly at random as you are coloring and responsiveness it, well, unresponsive. There is no confirmation of color selection, either, and retrieving the paint box after it is hidden is not so intuitive.

The value:
This is probably more appropriately priced at 1.99 per title. Although the voice recording is a very nice feature, the overall lack of interactivity is sure to disappoint especially compared to comparatively priced titles from other publishers. Also, the image quality is not up to the same standard of other publishers due to a lower resolution transfer to digital. The coloring pages are a very nice idea, but very poorly executed.
